Land and Mineral Use Records has ten map tools, as shown below. Each tool has two statuses: unselected and selected.

The following table describes each button in the Map Tools toolbar, from left to right.
| Zoom In | Zooms in on the map. With the Zoom In button selected, users can either click on a point or draw a rectangle on the map to zoom to that location. Zooming to a point will zoom the map and center it at the point. | |
| Zoom Out | Zooms out of the map. With the Zoom Out button selected, users can either click on a point or draw a rectangle on the map to zoom from that location. Zooming out of a point will zoom the map out and center it at the point. | |
| Pan | Allows users to click and drag the map. To move the map to the right, click and hold a point on the map. While still holding the mouse button, drag the mouse to the right. | |
| Identify | Provides information for the selected point. After clicking on the Identify button, select a point on the map. An "Identify Parcels" window will open, containing the various information options. For more information on the results of an Identify query, select "Identify Information" from the menu on the left. | |
| Overview | Turns on/off the overview map. The overview map is located in the upper left hand corner of the Map Window. The red box in the overview defines the map location in the United States. | |
| Full Extent | Adjusts the map to display all fifty states of the USA. | |
| Zoom Last | Returns the map viewer to the previous extent of the data. | |
| Clear | Clears the selected area. | |
| Prints the map currently selected, including the legend and overview, in HTML format. | ||

Select the different maps available by clicking on the "Select Map" scroll down bar in the upper right hand corner.

Under "Select Map" is a Layers Tab. When the Layers Tab is selected, the controls in the Layers window enable the user to manage the visibility of existing data. To see the individual layers in a folder, click on the folder. More than one data layer can be selected at a time, by clicking in the box to the left of the name. A check mark indicates that the data layer has been selected. Active Land and Mineral layers are in black; inactive themes are in gray. Zooming in activates more layers. For example, after clicking the "Active Mining Claims" checkbox, the active mining claims are displayed on the map.
The Land and Mineral layers under each of map varies depending on the map that is selected. For Example:

The folder "Rights of Way" in the layers window is common to all the maps. To open "Rights of Way" click on the folder. This folder shows the Rights of Way grants that are both authorized and closed on the map. To view the Rights of Way click on the box next to the title. A check mark indicates that the data layer has been selected. Zoom in on the map to see them. When the name changes from light gray to black the items will be viewable if selected.

The folder "Cases" in the layers window includes Cases That Affect Land Status (CTALS) which is a set of records that have been converted from the LR2000 Status System that affect the ownership and status of the land. They include such things as: grants, exchanges, withdrawals, mineral patents, acquisitions, land disposals, designated areas, pending exchanges, and Public Law 167, which have been added to the available layers list.
To see these records open the "Cases" folder and click on any of the boxes to select them. Zoom in on the map to be able to see them. When the name changes from light gray to black the items will be viewable if selected. Conversion of records for CTALS has just begun. More data will be available in the future.

The folder "Reference Themes" in the layers window is common to all the maps. To open "Reference Themes" click on the folder. Reference themes shows physical land attributes including Roads, Highways, Lakes, Rivers, Urban Areas, National Forests, State Boundaries and County Boundaries. To view a reference theme click on the box next to the title. A check mark indicates that the data layer has been selected. Zoom in on the map to see it. When the name changes from light gray to black the items will be viewable if selected.

The folder "PLSS" in the layers window is common to all the maps. To open "PLSS" click on the folder. The "PLSS" folder shows Public Land Survey System (PLSS) data including Townships, Sections, Smallest Division Boundaries and PLSS Acreage. To view a data layer click on the box next to a specific title. A check mark indicates that the data layer has been selected. Zoom in on the map to see it. When the name changes from light gray to black the items will be viewable if selected.

Common to all maps is the Base Map. The available Base Maps can be viewed by selecting the box or the radio button next to the base map. Base maps activated by a check box can all be displayed at one time, where as base maps indicated with a radio button can be displayed only one at a time. The radio button base maps are toggled on and off by selecting or unselecting any one of the maps. The map will refresh automatically. The base maps are for general reference to help locate an area of interest.
Base maps are provided from different sources and can only be used within this application.
