BLM is asking for your help to meet our goal, of serving a seamless multipurpose cadastre of the United States to the public for free. The BLM is currently in the process of expanding the LSIS geodatabase to include the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) and Metes and Bounds survey-based data from other sources including other federal agencies, state and county governments and other sources where available. We are hoping that your agency, along with other agencies, will help us by providing PLSS and Metes and Bounds survey-based data for the United States. We are currently serving BLM and U.S. Forest Service Data.

The GIS shapefiles in Land Survey Information System come with the following information:

  • Townships, Sections, Subdivisions of Sections
  • Horizontal Control Information
  • Metadata
  • Metes and Bounds data (future)

If you have PLSS or Metes and Bounds survey-based data for an area in the U.S. and would like to share your data with us and the public, please read the following requirements.

  • Your agency must own the survey-based data.
  • The data must be for public distribution for free.
  • Your agency is considered the data steward and is responsible for maintaining the survey-based data and sending us updates as information changes or new data becomes available.
  • The data must have metadata that is compliant with the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC).
  • Your survey-based data must be in one of the following formats: GIS shapefiles (ESRI), .e00 (ESRI Data Interchange file format), or SDE export file format (ESRI). Other formats will be considered, call Regina LeFort at (303) 236-0951 for more information on other formats or send in the attached form with your request.

You will need to fill out and submit the following on-line Data Provider Form. Please send us or provide access to your survey-based data by one of the following methods:

  • By E-mail if the zipped file is not larger than 5 Mb. E-mail to rlefort@blm.gov
  • By download from an ftp site or Web site.
  • By mail on a CD to:
