Township Geocoder

The Township Geocoder is a joint effort between the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) to provide township geocoding capabilities to aid fire fighting efforts and the analysis of historical fire data. The National Integrated Fire Center (NIFC) maintains a historical fire database within which fire start locations are contained. Historically, fires were reported in terms of Township, Range and Section. With modern maps and GPS, latitude and longitude values are now typically used to report fire locations. GeoCoder can be used for well locations, utility lines, real estate or any other activity where a land description or latitude and longitude conversion is needed.

The Township Geocoder allows for the conversion of Latitude and Longitude (Lat/Long) values into Township, Range and Section values. Likewise, Township, Range, Section, and quarter section values can be converted into polygon centroids in Lat/Long format.

There is also an option to bulk upload a file containing Townships or Lat/Long values and to have their respective Lat/long or Township values be returned. Maximum file size is 9.7 Kbytes. You may need to break up your files into smaller sizes to run them through geocoder. You files must also be formatted correctly. See formatting guide. If you have a very large file you may request that we run the file for you. Please send your request through the contact us form.

The Township Geocoder can only be used on lands where we have Public Land Survey System (PLSS) descriptions as shown in the data availability index on the LSIS viewer. It also does not work on alternate source PLSS data or flat files.
